Baba Kengbe “Da MC Teaser” may not strike a familiar chord to your ears, but for many weekly growing listeners of Raypower 100.5FM Abuja, every Sunday night, there is no other reason for tuning in and keeping their dial locked on,than this sweet voiced radio entertainer who is fast becoming a super star of a sort.
The programme, “Igbadun Repete” (Fun Galore), is a brain child of this veteran broadcaster whose real name is Olutomori Willoughby. Baba kengbe can best be described as an icon in the likes of his late independent broadcast colleague, Gbenga Adeboye, having begun his career as far back as 1990. The presenter’s entertaining style of broadcasting and his ability to easily switch from Yoruba, pidgin and other languages has made the show appealing to a cross section of the FCT residents.
The Ibadan Oyo State-born broadcaster, Olutomori who hails from Ebutte metta area of Lagos state, We gathered that though he conducts his programme in pidgin, is a graduate of Mass Communications from the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra state. However, for a number of his fans who have been listening to his show and given it rave review, not many of them would actually believe that this top rising presenter was once a house boy and clerk for late Mr. Tony Oyeyipo in Ibabdan. Aside, that he was formerly a commercial cab driver in Lagos. We made an effort to talk to the warmly Baba Kengbe and he had this to say “I used to talk on Lagos radios before I moved to Abuja. On getting here, I noticed that there weren’t much entertaining Pidgin programmes in the town so I came up with IGbadun Repete and so far the programme has been getting critical acclaim all over, not from the Yoruba’s alone but every other tribes here who always call us to make positive remarks about what we are doing”.
“Though, sponsorship has been a major issue here unlike if we were in Lagos, what has kept the show going is owing to its uniqueness being a purely and highly entertaining one. We dish information to our listeners on Nollywood, Bollywood and Hollywood. I have to thank my manager, Mr. Niyi Marrayesa , my producer, Olusola Okpodu and Raypower’s General manager, Mr. Kunle adewale that have been very encouraging urging us to stay on”, the award-winning broadcaster stated.
